Francis Scarpaleggia, Member of Parliament for Lac-Saint-Louis, today was elected Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development.
The multi-party committee, comprised of six Liberals (including the Chair), four Conservatives and one Bloc and NDP member is the legislative committee responsible for examining and amending environmental legislation adopted at Second Reading in the House of Commons prior to referral back to the House for later stages in the legislative process.
When not studying legislation, House committees conduct independent studies of issues agreed upon by committee members. These studies are typically accompanied by recommendations to the government.
“I am looking forward to delving into key upcoming legislation which the Liberal platform committed to bringing forward, namely, in the short term, a bill to strengthen and modernize the Canadian Environmental Protection Act,” said Scarpaleggia. “I am also looking forward to studying other environmental issues of concern to Canadians with a view to highlighting important priorities for government action.”
